Connected Communities Fund Stories: Waste2Taste

In the heart of the community, Waste2Taste stands as a shining example of how a small initiative can make a big difference. Founded by two great friends, Marie and Sandra, this organisation is dedicated to fostering a vibrant, healthy, and sustainable food culture, whilst simultaneously fighting climate change by reducing food waste and utilising high-quality surplus food.

Waste2Taste is a lovely community space at Shotover View where all are welcomed, even furry friends. Coincidentally, our visit coincided with one of their weekly knitting and crochet club days, and we were immediately struck by the sense of warmth and togetherness.

The guests, ranging from local residents to care home inhabitants, shared their heartwarming experiences. “It’s close and convenient, and a great space to meet each other,” one guest remarked. “I’ve made some really good friends by joining.” Another added, “It gives me a reason to leave my house and meet people like this.”

Beyond the social connections, Waste2Taste offers a space for personal growth and therapeutic activities. “It’s also good to learn,” a participant shared. “We learn from one another and pick up new skills.” For many, this space serves as a much-needed respite, as one guest expressed, “It’s a great asset here; there’s not enough for older people. This place destresses me, and I find it therapeutic.”

Waste2Taste’s impact extends beyond its cosy walls. They offer a bespoke catering service and a community cafe, all whilst remaining committed to reducing packaging and food waste. Their “Kindness Menu” is a heartwarming initiative that allows customers to pay it forward by purchasing an item for someone in need to enjoy at a later time.

Marie, one of the founders, shared her experience with the Connected Communities Fund, which has been beneficial to Waste2Taste’s success. “It was a simple process, and Angela at OCVA was able to answer all my questions and give me advice,” she said. “The fund itself has been incredibly helpful; it’s made a real difference to this place. We can run activities that, without it, we simply wouldn’t be able to. It’s really brought this community together.” These activities include a weekly knitting and crocheting club, weekly chair exercise classes, a monthly community meal, and a monthly bingo night.

With a combined 20 years of experience in the voluntary sector and a deep commitment to community engagement, Marie and Sandra have created a space that extends far beyond mere sustenance. Waste2Taste is a testament to the power of passion, creativity, and a genuine desire to make a positive impact.

As we bade farewell, Marie shared, “Everyone is welcome to Waste2Taste. Just come along.” It’s an open invitation to experience the warmth, nourishment, and sense of belonging that Waste2Taste offers to all.
