Every Wednesday from 9:30am to 2pm, the village hall in Long Hanborough comes alive with the Elderberries social club for the over 70s. This long-running group, established back in 1985, provides a weekly hub for older residents to socialise and enjoy a variety of activities together.
On a recent visit, the sounds of ABBA filled the room as members chatted and laughed with one another. Gill, who runs the club, warmly greeted everyone. The Elderberries is all about fostering community – members catch up over a two-course hot lunch, tea, coffee, cake, and biscuits.
The club offers much more than just meals though. There are games, boccia, bingo, quizzes, crafts and occasional entertainers or guest speakers. Different year groups from the local school sometimes visit too, singing songs and playing word games with the members.
“It really makes them feel part of the community,” Gill explained.
Gill’s dedication is evident in her efforts to tailor activities to the members’ preferences. She ensures birthdays are celebrated by placing announcements in the Hanborough Herald and organising birthday cakes. Her strong connection and understanding of the members shine through.
When asked about the impact of the Connected Communities Fund, Gill answered “We’re very grateful for it. It’s funded our entertainment; the members love the singing, and it provides us with a sense of security for future planning.”
For many attendees who live alone, the Elderberries is something to look forward to each week. As one member shared: “I originally came to bring my late husband but had such a good time I kept coming myself. Being widowed is hard, but this group gives me a focus and I’ve made great friends.”
What stands out is the lively, engaged atmosphere as people socialise. When the entertainment arrived – singer Chris performing ‘Here Comes the Sun’ – the members joined in singing, tapping along, and laughing together.
