I recently had the pleasure of joining Sylvia Barker and the Cutteslowe Seniors group at one of their regular Friday sessions. The room was filled with friendly chatter and a real sense of community. Everyone soon settled in to hear from Bruce, a legal adviser, who delivered a warm and engaging talk on some of the important decisions we face later in life. He guided the group through topics like inheritance tax, powers of attorney, and the different types of wills—sharing clear, practical advice that was both reassuring and genuinely appreciated.
Afterwards, the group shared lunch together—fresh soup and rolls—served with warmth and enthusiasm by two young volunteers from a local school, their energy and kindness added a lovely intergenerational feel to the morning.
Maria, a regular attendee, captured the group’s spirit perfectly:
“Everyone is so warm and welcoming. Sylvia does a fantastic job, and volunteer Linda is wonderful too.”
Sylvia, who coordinates the group, spoke of the impact the Connected Communities Fund has had
“We are so grateful—we simply couldn’t carry on without the fund.”
Cutteslowe Seniors operates as a thriving social and educational club for local residents aged 60 and above. Meeting on the second and fourth Friday of each month, the group alternates between engaging social sessions featuring guest speakers or activities, and exciting outings to places of interest throughout the region. For many members, it represents far more than just social interaction—it’s a genuine lifeline of connection, support, and community belonging.
Maria’s reflection beautifully encapsulated what draws people back session after session. Her words highlight how the group addresses not just social needs but also builds confidence and emotional wellbeing.
“We come because we feel welcomed, we get to see friends, and the outings are a real highlight. I feel so much more comfortable being part of a group.”
