We’re on board for CTWeek25! From 13-17 October 2025, communities across the UK will join us in celebrating the vital work of the Community Transport sector. This year’s theme, More than a Minibus, highlights the impact of accessible, inclusive, and affordable transport in strengthening community bonds.
A volunteer from All Together In Charlbury shares their experience:
“I have been an ATIC volunteer driver since the scheme started, prompted by needs which became apparent from responses to the Charlbury Town Survey in 2016. As a volunteer you make yourself available at times that suit you, Charlbury has about 7 or 8 volunteer drivers.
As a driver I find it very rewarding to assist taking a client for a hospital or clinic appointment, or an essential shopping trip. Usually it is because there is no family or friend available to help and having a friendly travelling companion takes some stress out of the situation for the client. “
In 2022, a researcher from Oxford Universities’ Transport studies wrote about the Charlbury community transport scheme: Lea’s research shows that community transport provides both a transport and social service with many different benefits.
The transport it delivers is unique in being made low-cost, flexible and functionally accessible. Further, it is a social scheme that has been made to meet passengers’ needs beyond transport, to provide mobility to those with few other options and to build community.
These unique aspects of community transport are made possible through dedicated volunteers informally and flexibly responding to needs.
A client from ATIC shares how they have found the service:
“I have used the ATIC service many times over the last few years for hospital appointments and physiotherapist appointments in Oxford, Banbury and Chipping Norton.
I have found the service excellent from speaking to the call-centre for booking help and the brilliant team of volunteers who drive you. It is lovely to have someone to chat to on the journey who is local. Thank you all so much”
– Thanks to All Together In Charlbury for sharing these lovely insights with us!
